Durga is the goddess of divine power, protection, and righteousness. Her consort is Shiva and she is often depicted riding her vehicle, the lion, Dawon. Carrying many weapons, she symbolizes strength and the triumph of good over evil. Durga was created to defeat the buffalo demon, Mahishasura, who could not be conquered by any male warrior.
