RAVANNA
Ravana was the powerful king of Lanka and a mighty warrior, scholar, and devotee of Shiva. He is traditionally depicted with ten heads, symbolizing his vast knowledge, mastery of the scriptures, and extraordinary intellectual abilities. Ravana is credited with deep learning in subjects ranging from philosophy and statecraft to music and astronomy, and many traditions regard him as one of the greatest scholars of his age. Despite his wisdom and spiritual accomplishments, Ravana's pride, ambition, and desire ultimately lead to his downfall. His abduction of Sita, the wife of Ram, sets in motion the great conflict of the Ramayana. Although often portrayed as a villain, Ravana is not depicted as purely evil; many versions of the epic present him as a tragic figure whose virtues are overshadowed by arrogance and attachment.
